Counseling is based on counselor, faculty, staff, parent, and student referrals. The CMCSS district-wide online referral system allows students in grades 3-5 to refer themselves to counseling if they have an issue that they wish to speak to the school counselor privately. However, any student regardless of age can request to speak with the school counselor at any time. Parents, caregivers, and staff can make counseling referrals at any time. Teachers, administrators, and staff use the online referral system to communicate students' needs with the school counselors.

About
Standards

The ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors are the basis of ASCA's ethical program.

The ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies outline the mindsets and behaviors school counselors need to meet the rigorous demands of the school counseling profession and the needs of pre-K–12 students.

The "ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Every Student" describe the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college, and career readiness and social/emotional development.
